Major floods continue to affect northern and northeastern Thailand, as rescue teams work relentlessly to evacuate water from the affected areas.
In Sukhothai, soldiers and residents joined forces to strengthen the dike along the Yom River in Sri Samrong and Mueang districts, which had been severely damaged in recent days.
The floodwaters inundated several dozen houses, forcing the inhabitants to take refuge on a highway.
Authorities in Sukhothai province reported that staff had been deployed to place sandbags at several points along the river. The collapse of the dike caused damage to residents’ properties and belongings, as their homes were quickly submerged by the floods.
However, the Governor reiterated that Sukhothai Historical Park and the various tourist sites were now safe in case of flooding.
In the northeast of the country, Kalasin Governor Kraisorn Kongchalad has installed additional pumps to accelerate water drainage in Rong Kham district.
Soldiers also came to assist the local population to reinforce a damaged section of a dike in Mueang district.
In Ubon Ratchathani, Na Yia district was also overwhelmed by water, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.
Several thousand households in a total of 16 districts of this province were affected by the floods, also causing damage to a large part of agricultural land.
